In the sixth century St. Leo became a civilly organized village:Procopius of Caesarea marks the town among the fortresses of the region.
Since 1000, in homage to the patron saint Leone, the town was called San Leo.
In the impregnable fortress of San Leo, Berengar II, King of the Italic Kingdom, defeated in Pavia by Otto I of Germany, sought shelter in 961. The siege gave proof of the extraordinary defensive function covered by the small town. He gave way to Otto in December 963.
Cagliostro (his real name was Joseph Balsamo) was an alchemist of the century of enlightenment.
He openly challenged the Church founding a lodge of Egyptian Rite in London and assuming the title of "Great Cofto." The Holy Office sent out a death sentence for heresy and seditious activities. The sentence was commuted in prison for life by Pope Pius VI and he died in the fortress of San Leo in 1795, bringing with him all the secrets of a restless and adventurous life.

MONDAVIO
Mondavio is located on a hill in a panoramic position a few kilometers from the Adriatic Sea.
The name of Mondavio appears for the first time in a document dated 1178 and subsequently in a Vatican register in 1289.
San Francesco liked the amenities of the place and the variety of birds that he discovered there:that's why the name Mons Avium as "Mount of Birds" (now there's a dove in the municipal coat of arms).
Mondavio went under several domains, including that of Malatesta, Alessandro Piccolomini, Giovanni della Rovere, Lorenzo de' Medici and the town of Fano.
Giovanni stayed for a long time in Mondavio and asked the genius architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini to build the fortress (built between 1482 and 1492),which, in all these centuries, has never undergone any siege nor fired a shot by its guns.
The interiors correspond at the original structures.

According to the tradition, within these walls, a tragedy has been consumed: that of Paolo and Francesca, whom Dante has dedicated a chant of the Divine Comedy.
